Module Five

As you can see from the “table of contents” page, there are five modules and this is the last one.

You will note that there is not as much to review for this module. We are just about done reviewing the Burns’ series and your course readings will be completed. I have not put much else here. In a sense, I front loaded the first four modules. This was done with the aim of giving you more time to work on your research paper (in class I normally give a week or two of “Research Time”). I am sure, if you are being diligent and inquisitive, that you are finding much to read and review. I want to make sure you have sufficient time to do that. I also want to remind you that I would love to meet, either in person or virtually, anyone that wants to talk about their research. The early the better.

Course textbook readings for Module Four:

From Gallagher/Waugh, The American War, finish

From Fetter-Vorm/Kelman. Battle Lines, finish

Videos for this fourth module:

-From The Civil War: A Film by Ken Burns:**

o   War is All Hell

o   The Better Angels of Our Nature

-From Georgia Public Broadcasting: “When Georgia Howled: Sherman on the March

-“Aftershock: Beyond the Civil War

-From the American Battlefield Trust:***

o   Franklin

o   Cold Harbor

o   Chattanooga

o   Petersburg

o   Appomattox Court House

**Burns’ documentaries date to the 1990s, but they are still quite useful, using images and voices that give a deeper insight into the war.

***These have a short video at the top and a narrative below. I have chosen the major battles but feel free to explore your interests.
